Oxytetracycline + Polymyxin B

Steril Ophthalmic Ointment

• Composition: Each 5g contains: Oxytetracycline (HCl) 25 mg Polymyxin B sulfate 50000 I.U.

Pharmaceutical specifications: Oxytetracycline is one of the most versatile of the broad-spectrum antibiotics, and is effective in the treatment of infections due to gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, both aerobic and anaerobic, spirochetes, rickettsiae, and certain of the larger viruses. Polymyxin B is a bactericidal antibiotic and is effective exclusively on gram negative bacteria.
The broad-spectrum effectiveness of Oxytetracycline against both gram-positive and gram negative organisms is enhanced by the particular effectiveness of polymyxin B against infections associated with gram-negative organisms, especially those due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, where polymyxin B is the antibiotic of choice. In addition, there are evidences about the antifungal effect of polymyxin B.

• Target species:: large animals, Small animals

• Indications: For the prophylaxis and local treatment of superfacial ocular infections due to oxytetracycline and polymyxin – sensitive organisms, including infections due to streptococci, rickettsiae, E coli,and A. aerogenes such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, pink eye, corneal ulcer, blepharitis in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and horses, ocular infections due to secondary bacterial complications of distemper in dogs, in bacterial inflammatory conditions which may occur secondary to other infections diseases in the above series.

Method and dosage:

• Turn the lower eyelid and empty a sufficient amount of eye ointment evenly and slowly into the lower conjunctival sac.
• This ointment can be prescribed 2 to 4 times a day.
• For animal with only a single infected eye it is recommended, to prevent cross infections, that both eyes be treated, treating the infected eye first to avoid transferring the infection.

Precautions:

• For Veterinary Use Only
• For external use only
• In case of allergy, stop the treatment.
• Wash hands after use.
• Throw away the rest of the ointment after use.
• Keep out of reach of children.
• The use of oxytetracycline and other antibiotics may cause the growth of resistant organisms such as monilia, staphylococci and other bacteria. If new non-susceptible bacterial and fungal species are observed, it should be re-evaluated.
